Growing up, I experimented with computers, video games, and software because I wanted to understand what made them work—and what they could make possible. Technology felt like both a puzzle and a tool for changing someone's experience.

Superhero stories gave that curiosity a direction: use whatever abilities you have to help. In high school, I earned the Gates Millennium Scholarship as one of 1,000 students selected nationwide that year. It opened the door to study computer engineering through a master's degree and turn an early fascination into a career of building useful, dependable systems.

Systems foundations

Where code met consequence

Robotics was where software stopped being abstract and started carrying physical consequences. At Omron Automation, I began with FPGA design and verification before moving into embedded software for industrial robots.

I built hardware interfaces and safety-critical C++ control software on QNX real-time systems, working across hardware, controls, test, and software teams. That environment taught me to respect constraints, debug across boundaries, and design for the conditions a system actually faces.

Cloud at scale

Engineering for cloud scale

At AWS, the unit of scale changed—from one machine to distributed systems serving teams across the company. I built backend and network-automation services in Python, TypeScript, Go, and Java, and designed serverless API patterns that other teams could adopt.

I also built a production GenAI ticket-triage service, established automated testing practices, trained engineers, and coordinated cross-team outage recovery. The lasting lesson was that reliability is both technical and human: understand the system, communicate clearly, and create the conditions for others to succeed.

Making AI practical

At TCWGlobal, the work moved closer to the people depending on the product every day. I led modernization of a global workforce platform while improving the speed and reliability of payroll, workforce, and performance-management workflows.

I also helped turn Generative AI from an expensive proposal into an achievable product strategy. By grounding the architecture in a real problem, clear constraints, and measurable operating cost, I designed a RAG and vector-search approach that could deliver value without unnecessary complexity.

Finding the right kind of fit

I had long admired the care behind many Japanese products—technology and experiences designed to make everyday life a little better. Moving to Tokyo gave me the chance to experience that culture more closely and test a dream I had carried for years.

Tokyo was valuable precisely because it clarified the difference between a place I admired and the life in which I do my best work. I returned to California with sharper priorities: meaningful products, thoughtful teams, room to create, and a sustainable life around the work.

Building beyond the job description

I created Nick Vaughn Industries as an independent engineering practice and a place to keep exploring applied AI, backend systems, cloud architecture, and product development. It gave me room to prototype, learn in public, and turn emerging technology into working software.

That work grew into the Nexus Initiative, an international open-source engineering community connecting and teaching developers across Africa, India, the United States, and beyond. As a volunteer manager, I guide Agile product building through project direction, architecture guidance, code review, and mentoring—creating a collaborative delivery experience that helps engineers grow together.
